John Verheul, MD, MPH

John Verheul, MD, MPH is a Family Physician with over 28 years of experience in the greater Richmond, VA area. He completed his undergraduate training with honors at Hope College in Michigan, before returning to his native country to graduate summa cum laude from medical school at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam in 1984. After obtaining certifications in primary care and occupational medicine in Europe, he completed his residency in Family Practice as Chief Resident of the Chesterfield Family Practice Residency Program in 1988. He subsequently went on to complete a Master’s Degree in Public Health at Virginia Commonwealth University in 1992.

Dr. Verheul was a physician with Family Practice Associates from 1988 until 2013. He then transitioned into his concierge practice with SignatureMD and is also co-owner of CompassMD, a firm specializing in occupational health needs. As such, he has been the Medical Director for the Virginia State Police for many years and provides health care to many local and regional police and firefighter organizations. He is also certified as a Medical Review Officer.

Besides his love of primary care and occupational medicine, he holds an appointment as Associate Clinical Professor at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine. He regularly teaches the finer aspects of Family Medicine to both medical and nurse practitioner students through programs at both Virginia Commonwealth University and affiliated health programs at the University of Virginia and Eastern Virginia School of Medicine. He was voted a “TOP DOC” in Family Medicine by his peers as published in the RICHMOND MAGAZINE in April, 2010.

Dr. Verheul enjoys traveling and has done so extensively through his MPH training, having provided volunteer care in Brazil, the Caribbean and Eastern Europe. He is fluent in Dutch, conversant in German and frequently returns to see his extended family in the Netherlands. He is a licensed pilot and has in the past been approved as an FAA Regional Flight Examiner. He has three wonderful children and is an accomplished jazz pianist. You may just hear him play locally at various clubs and social functions!

Michael Perini, MD

Dr. Michael A. Perini has over 27 years of experience in the medical field. He graduated from Ross University School of Medicine in 1996. Dr. Perini has expertise in treating heart failure, aneurysm, chronic high blood pressure, among other conditions. He is now accepting new patients.

Beth Murray, FNP-BC, MSN, BSN, RN

Growing up locally around the Midlothian area, Beth has over 15 years of nursing experience including critical care, emergency medicine and cardiology. She graduated from ODU with Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing and South University with a Masters of Nursing. Currently, Beth is Board Certified with the American Association of Nurse Practitioner.

Beth and her husband have three boys. They enjoy watching their boys play soccer and music. During the summer, they often travel together in the camper. They have two dogs, Jake and Ruby.

Gina Smoot MSN, LNP, FNP-C, CCM, QMHP-T

Gina is a licensed Nurse Practitioner with 13+ years of experience in the nursing profession. She graduated summa cum laude from South College earning her Master of Science degree in Nursing with concentration on family practice. She is licensed as a nurse practitioner in Virginia, and she holds several professional certifications including Family Nurse Practitioner through the American Association of Nurse Practitioners, Case Manager through the Commission for Case Managers, and Medical Examiner through the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. She is also registered as a Qualified Mental Health Professional Trainee through the Virginia Board of Counseling.

Gina has had the privilege of working with patients from all walks of life in various settings as well as within our local community. She has also worked alongside many medical and allied health practitioners of different professional backgrounds or specialties most of her career. This experience has allowed her to see firsthand the real life challenges many of us face when it comes to our health and related needs and has provided her a diverse perspective and approach to patient care. Known for her commitment as a patient advocate, Gina’s patient first mindset and her stubbornness and determination to overcome any barriers or obstacles in the way, are what set her apart.

Gina was born in Ohio and was raised in Chesterfield, Virginia. She and her fiancé have 2 wonderful children, 2 fur babies, and 7 fish. When she isn’t working or reading the latest research you can find her spending time with her family swimming, jet skiing, watching movies, catching Pokémon, and/or playing video games. She enjoys listening to music, dancing, all forms of art, and she never turns down a DIY home improvement or furniture restoration project.

Jung de Thouars, FNP-C

Jung de Thouars has worked as a Family Nurse Practitioner since 2019, she obtained her MSN in FNP from Chamberlain University. She is a Primary Care Provider of Health Visions MD, an Primary Care provider that is honored to empower individuals to achieve vitality and wholeness by developing personalized, mind and life-force optimization plans.

As part of Health Visions MD, Jung has worked hard to drive a culture of the utmost care to numerous counties across the State of Virginia, including actively traveling to provide care where it is needed the most. She has experiences in different experiences such as occupational health, weight loss, and primary care provider. Jung is also part of Health Visions MD derm team and provides Botox and fillers.

She resides in Midlothian, Virginia and enjoys the life of a care provider. Jung is bilingual and speaks fluent English and Korean. When she isn’t spending time with her patients or helping grow Health Visions MD, you’ll find her in her favorite Brazilian Jiu Jitsu class.

Shawni Yeager, P.A.

Shawni is a Physician Assistant (PA) that completed her undergraduate training at the College of William and Mary before moving to New York to complete her Masters degree in Physician Assistant Studies. She graduated from Touro College with honors and is a member of the National Honor Society for Physician Assistants.

She serves as an adjunct faculty member of multiple PA and NP schools teaching various courses in clinical medicine, leading student remediation efforts, and serving as student mentor during clinical training. Shawni has been a practicing PA in primary care since 2016, and she enjoys forming a collaborative team with patients and other healthcare providers to prevent and treat disease. Specific clinical interests include: weight loss, injections for carpal tunnel syndrome, injections for arthritis of the hands and knees, comprehensive skin cancer screening exams, skin lesion removal, migraines, and fibromyalgia.

Marie Serfis, PA

Marie Serfis is a Physician Assistant (PA) who graduated from George Washington University with a Master’s in Health Science in Physician Assistant Studies in May of 2023. Originally from Northern Virginia, she completed her undergraduate degree in Biology at William & Mary before moving to Richmond. 

In her free time, Marie enjoys spending time with her family, reading, playing with her two cats, and running. She is excited to have moved back to the Richmond area since completing her graduate studies. Marie is passionate about preventative healthcare and is accepting new patients.

Elizabeth Howard, MSc, FNTP, CNS, LDN

Elizabeth Howard (Liz) began her transformational nutrition journey 18 years ago in the colorful raw foods movement while living on the West Coast.  Her passion for whole foods, combined with a desire to help individuals facing food and health challenges, led her to leave a successful career in the environmental field and pursue further training as a nutritional therapist. For more than 16 years she has been a board certified Functional Nutritional Therapy Practitioner (FNTP) pinpointing individual nutritional needs and providing solutions. She has held a Master of Science (MS) degree in Nutrition for more than 9 years, is a Certified Nutrition Specialist (CNS) through the Board for Certification of Nutrition Specialists (BCNS), and is a Licensed Dietician Nutritionist (LDN).  
 
As a Functional & Integrative Nutritionist, Liz has counseled thousands of individuals, including many in one-on-one programs to help them better understand food as both a source of fuel and a source of healing. Liz is an avid learner and supporter not only to those in need of nutritional therapy, but within the blossoming field of health professionals in the integrative and functional medicine space.  She provides clinical support to other practitioners and individuals.  This includes lab analysis and nutritional follow-up for a  large variety of conditions including:  digestive imbalances (IBS, GERD, IBD, gastritis, pancreatitis, bowel disease, fatty liver etc.), bariatrics, weight and metabolic management, diabetes, thyroid & women’s conditions, autoimmune conditions, cardio-vascular concerns, geriatrics, sleep, mental health, and more.  
 
Liz considers herself to be a “Foodie” and a lover of all things tasty and nutritious.  Another distinguishing aspect about Liz, is that at her former juice bar and healthy café in Virginia she developed a therapeutic juice brand.  She aspires to continue supporting her community through nutritional services, teaching and advocacy.
